Strategy
A Simple Recipe for Success
At Epic, I’ve learned a simple recipe for making meaningful, lasting progress in improving our health system.
Engage with stakeholders
Listen closely to the people we serve, patients and providers. Define a clear, shared understanding of the problem before proposing solutions.
Co-design to Meaningfully innovate
Co‑design with patients, providers, industry experts, and policymakers. A solution only matters if it’s adopted.
One bite‑size challenge at a time
Break down complexity into manageable pieces. Deliver iterative wins that build trust, validate direction, and compound into lasting progress.
Development
I design and build software that helps people and organizations safely access and share healthcare data. My goal is to support data-driven solutions and decisions that improve health outcomes, lower costs, and make it easier to connect our healthcare system.
OAuth 2.0
Dynamic Client Registration
Implemented UDAP-based Dynamic Client Registration, enabling trusted, automated onboarding of digital health apps to a trusted application eco-system.
SSO
Single Sign-On Enhancements
Enhanced Epic’s SSO framework with additional Open ID Connect flows to reduce the amount of screens patients have to click on when sharing data.
APIs
Epic API Generator Enhancements
Extended Epic’s internal REST API generation framework to support creating APIs that can be communictated with multiple HTTP methods, URL routes, parameters and parameter sources under one OAuth scope.
Standards & Regulatory
As a subject matter expert on authorization, authentication, and data exchange at Epic, I engage in standards and regulatory work to ensure the systems we build for patients and providers align with the broader ecosystem. My approach:
- Understand the problems a proposed specification or regulation is intended to solve, and assess the technical and regulatory path it suggests.
- Engage with Epic’s community of patients, providers, and subject matter experts to gather perspectives on real‑world value and feasibility.
- Advocate for standards that are clear in intent, safe in practice, and feasible to implement at scale.
Specifications I've Contributed to
- OAuth 2.0
UDAP Dynamic Client Registration
Introduced a federated approach to distributing clients, reducing onboarding burden and improving scalability.
- Patient Access
International Patient Access (IPA)
Contributing toward a consistent, global FHIR approach for patient‑mediated access across borders through targeted requirments on clients and servers.
- Patient Summary
International Patient Summary (IPS)
Contributing toward a consistent, global FHIR approach for clinical patient summary exchange access across borders through targeted requirments on clients and servers.
- National Standards
Pan‑Canadian Health Data Content Framework & CACDI
Supporting alignment of provincial data frameworks for interoperable, scalable data exchange.
Speaking
I speak about secure healthcare interoperability with a focus on practical implementation, focusing on the parts that help patients get healthier and providers deliver better care. My aim is to share what works, what breaks, and how standards can be applied meaningfully.
You can find me at industry conferences like HL7 Working Group Meetings and Connectathons, Epic's Expert and User Group Meetings, university career fairs, and more! Always happy to meet new people and catch up with familiar ones. Please do come up and say hi if we run into each other :)
